An open letter to Mr Christopher Holland.

Dear Mr Holland,

I hope this letter finds both you and your family in good health. There’s two parts to this letter, the first is a thank you, the second is a polite request.

First of all, thank you. Thank you for just under twelve months ago purchasing the IP for Wasps, and working hard, alongside former players such as Peter Scrivener and Kenny Logan, to find a way for Wasps to compete in the championship this forthcoming season. This was welcome news to Wasps fans and also gave some hope to those businesses who were owed money that their debts could be repaid.

When the news was confirmed in May that the club would not be able to compete, the statement issued made sense. I fully appreciate how difficult it must have been to attract investment, given the uncertainty about the promotion opportunities for the club once ‘reformed’. Though this was tremendously disappointing news, this was not a surprise. I, as did everyone I spoke to, fully appreciated the tremendous efforts that had gone into finding a solution to an incredibly complex issue.

However, throughout this period from October – May, it was very obvious that the lack of communication from the club was causing concern and significant frustration from the fan base. This was acknowledged in the last part of the above mentioned statement; ‘Our silence has been deliberate and necessary. Firstly, we had nothing definitive to say that couldn’t have changed the following day, and often did, and secondly, we only recovered our social media accounts and rebuilt a new web site in the first week of May. You will hear more from us soon’.

This brings me to my polite request.  We are now approaching the end of August, more than three months on from when this statement was made. Nothing has been shared since. So…..

If it is all over – tell us.

If there are discussions taking place, but no news to share yet – tell us.

If an announcement will be made soon, tell us when this will be.

If you need the fans to do something to help, ask us!

I can only speak for myself, but my interest in Rugby Union is dwindling fast. The brand of rugby the national team is currently playing is awful, the issues with concussion and tackle height are creating more headlines than the game itself, and what was a regular weekend event for my family and I is now completely absent with no sign of it returning. I suspect I am not alone in feeling disillusioned and a little fatigued by it all.

“As the new custodian of Wasps I am fully aware of the responsibilities I have to its supporters, history and heritage. I do not underestimate that duty”. Your words back in December 2022.

Wasps fans have been through a lot in the last twelve months, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask for some clarity for the same group you’ll be relying upon to return in droves if this show ever gets back on the road. Time to demonstrate that responsibility please.

Thank you for all you have done to date.

Best wishes,

Chris
