Nearly twelve months then. Nearly twelve months since we got the news we were dreading, and many of the Coventry City fans seemed to be dreaming of. Wasps were heading into administration. A few days later, the reality really hit when every single member of Wasps staff was made redundant. This was twelve months ago. Headline below still makes for terrible reading.

Since then, so much has happened. Wasps IP was quickly bought. There was hope they could feature in the Championship this season. This relatively quickly faded as the RFU continued to provide any real clarity on their vision for the game in England. Absolutely astonishing. London Irish went. Championship club and winners Jersey went. Four clubs in twelve months. Worcester Warriors were first to go and now the current Wasps owner seems to own the company that pretty much owns that club. Confused? I know I am. England are about to play in a World Cup QF in Marseille. 4.5k seats remain unsold, for a World Cup knockout game on the country’s doorstep. In short, the game so many of us love appears to be bouncing from one crisis to the next.
I’m in a fortunate position that I occasionally get snippets of information from a variety of people about the club. I emphasise snippets. I know a little more than most about plans for Prem 2 from a very reliable source, not actually connected with Wasps. I hear different things about things going on behind the scenes from people involved or well connected to the club. I keep this information to myself because I am conscious that these details are shared in confidence.
What I won’t keep to myself though is how fed up I am about this situation. In what sport can four professional clubs go out of business and the governing body try to excuse themselves of any responsibility? In what kind of sport can the CEO of that governing body give an interview claiming that the game is on the cusp of something special? What, record breaking redundancies? In what kind of sport can a whole host of supporters have zero clue about what is going on with their clubs, and whether they’ll see their clubs ever compete again, and I absolutely include Wasps in that? It is noticeable how little activity there is on many of the Wasps forums now, with the news about the recent developments at Worcester a good example of this. Despite the clear connection with Wasps, it barely made a ripple. It almost feels like people have given up now and resigned to never seeing the club play again.
I don’t think I am that camp. Well I know I’m not. I know that there are some very good people working very hard to find solutions to a complex problem. I just hope that the progress that is being made with this will be available soon. With Christmas just over two months away, it will be the present many of us have been wishing for. Keep the faith, as difficult as it is.
Finally, my predictions for the quarter finals. The Six Nations teams to prevail. Just.
Have a good weekend everybody and as always, thanks for reading.
